Baishizhou Redevelopment

Do Sustainable Redevelopment Better

LVGEM’s Baishizhou redevelopment project represents a radically new model of urban living for China—sustainable and forward-thinking on a global scale with an emphasis on lifestyle and livability. The 13-square-kilometer city district in the largest of Shenzhen’s “urban villages” was selected by LVGEM as a centerpiece for cutting-edge human-centric urban renewal.

The
Challenge

LVGEM envisions the redevelopment of Baishizhou as a national and global model of future urban living. We participated in the development of a comprehensive plan for the lifestyle destination, reflecting luxury, cultural entertainment, and a myriad of health and wellness experiences centered around a 3-level mixed-use public park. The destination incorporates hospitality, an education and technology innovation center, cultural installations, and an outdoor urban shopping complex. The focal point of the development is a high-end luxury district including an iconic tower, branded luxury residential tower, and an innovative retail hub that brings together global brands, cultural assets, destination iconography, and green public space.

The
Approach

With the Baishizhou Project, we needed to understand the full picture of how the complex would function as a living urban system. In addition to addressing city systems, resources, and human flow, it needed to meet a more enlightened standard of well being for both the humans living there and the larger environment.

We place a high priority on creating solutions that advance environmental stewardship and sustainable innovation. We believe the natural world is integral to human wellness. It was important to us that we help the client embed ecological values into the overall design of the project.

We looked around the world at the most innovative examples of urban regeneration and the premier lifestyle and cultural destinations, taking inspiration from the best. It was also critical that we were cognizant of the cultural context and unique needs of the project, recognizing that Baishizhou and its residents needed a one-of-a-kind solution. The project is pioneering a new vision of urban life in China and the plan needed to lead the way into new territories where few others had ventured.
